Photography, Not Photoshop

I'm getting tired of seeing photoshop being used as a crutch rather that as a tool to make good images better. So I decided to post an un-retouched image...

YEEEESSS!!!!!! Yes yes yes yes YES!!!!!!!! I'm ALWAYS having this argument with Daniel...I say something about you, or Rod, or a really good photographer, and he's like, "Meh, ANYBODY can be a good photographer! All you have to do is have Photoshop!!" I am SOOOOOO showing him this picture when he gets home!!! :) Awesome work bro!

Haha that's funny! Tell him that rod doesn't ever photoshop his stuff anyway. His graphic artist does, and they basically just need color and tonal adjustments.

Thanks! Hey did you ever end up with a camera? I've been checking into possibilities for you to learn in MN...

I get annoyed by that, as well. People tend to begin believing that any image can be amazing when it's pushed through Photoshop. It ends up being an excuse to skip out on shooting quality.

But this image is fantastic! How did you get the beautiful bokeh in the background?

Thanks! Christmas lights and 1.8. There is a retouched version on facebook too...

Nice, that's a cool idea. I'll have to try it some time...

Were you shooting with the 50mm 1.8?

Yeah I'm considering doing a whole series of untouched images on here just to really get the point across. Photoshop should never be a crutch. If you spend more time editing then shooting, it drives up your overhead, and decreases quality. That's not cool. Yeah it's the 50mm 1.8. Best lens out there for the money.

Yeah, that's a cool idea. I think shooting while keeping in mind that you wouldn't be using Photoshop would be a really good exercise for getting lighting, composition, and overall good photography down. Photoshop and extreme edits have become so commonplace that that is what people expect now, and that's where they think the talent comes in.

Nice! I had the 50mm f/1.8 for my Nikon system, but I sold it when I went Canon and haven't picked up the Canon one yet... I think that's coming in the near future, though - love that lens!

Yes! It is a MUST HAVE for my bag.

Even if you are going to edit the images it does help to tell yourself you aren't going to. Make good images better, not bad images bearable...
